Chath festival and worship of Sun god.

Chath is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Hindus. It is the worship of Sun god. In Nepal, the Chath festival is predominantly popular and celebrated by the Madheshi sect. The Madhesi sect bears close resemblance with the Uttar Pradesh and Bihar culture because they are the border states with Nepal. It is for the reason there is cultural exchange between two countries which makes the friendship bond even more stronger. The Nepalese and Indian people are united by one similar culture and lifestyle and that is Hinduism and Buddhism.

Every year when the Deewali ends and after four days past the Deewali, Chhat festival is celebrated. It is also the time when the winter formally starts in Indian subcontinent. It starts to get cold or in pure sense it is the start of the winter. The hardcore winter will then follow in the days to come and in Makar Sankranti, the cold hits the saturation point.

Now the question arises, "Why is the Sun god worshiped in Chath?". Is it because of the start of the winter?. If it is so then wouldn't it be more reasonable to worship Sun God in the month of Poush or January?. Is the worshiping of Sun god because its winter the only reason?. The answer can be given from the perspective of Jyotish.

After the conclusion of the Deewali and four days past it, Chath festival is celebrated. Deewali always falls on the month of either the end of the Asoj month or the the Kartik month. In the Kartik month the Sun god transcends to the Tula rashi or the Libra horoscope. The Sun is debilitated in Tula rashi and is exalted at Mesha or Aries. The Sun is the most weakest in Tula rashi.

Now, Sun or Surya devta is the known as the king of the nine planets. The Sun also represents the soul inside us and the seven chakras. The Sun is atmakaraka. In the month of Kartika the Sun devta is the most weakest. This would in turn affect the Atma karaka or the Soul aspect in humans. To not be affected by the loss of Surya devta aura inherent in us, we worship Sun god to fill the emptiness inside us. We worship Surya devta to not be devoid of the most vital aspect and that is the soul aspect of a  human.

Secondly, through the perspective of Surya Yoga, we also worship sun god in Chatha festival because Sun represents the seven chakras inside our body. To worship the sun god is to strengthen the inner seven suryas or the chakras. The Kundalini Yoga can be conducted through Surya yoga and it should be learned from a respected guru who can teach you Surya yoga. Surya is worshiped to balance the chakras too.

Chatha without Sun god worship is incomplete and without Sun god we would miss the most vital aspect of a human i.e the soul aspect. I was fortunate enough to be initiated into the sadhana of Lord Surya by His Holiness Kaulantak Peethadeshwar Mahayogi Satyendra Nath ji Maharaja of
Kaula lineage.
