Bhairava part -ii (Dogs and Bhairava)
Mahasiddha Dattatreya with dogs. Mahasiddha Dattatreya is also from the kaula tantric lineage. |
Bhairava is a fierce warrior god. The dogs are the vahana of Bhairava. To understand the attributes of Bhairava, one can decipher it by analyzing the traits and attributes of a dog. Let us first analyze some attributes and traits of a dog.
Dog are humans best friend. Dogs are great companions and accomplices. They give a good company. It is very faithful towards its master. It barks to the whole world but it wags its tail to its master. The dog never barks to its master. Even if it does, it is non aggressive. No matter how much you beat it, how much you scold it, punish it, it always wags its tail to its master. For instance:
In the American film Hachi, the dog always accompanies its master Richard Gere to the train station and stays there until the master arrives and they return home. Oneday Richard Gere dies, he doesn't return the dog then waits on the train station and doesn't return home. It waits for its master for yars and one day it dies. Such loyal is Bhairava to their masters.
It also protects its master from any attack. It also protects its master house from any trespassing. It is carnivorous in nature which literally means it eats flesh. The dogs are trained rigorously by its master to tame it so that it becomes a fierce and useful dog instead of being a stray dog. The master trains its dog through every means, through reward or through stick but while its trained the master is merciless and the more merciless the master at the time of the training, the more better the dog becomes.
Now, the attributes and traits of a tantric Bhairava can be explained by the nature and attributes of a dog or the relationship of a dog with its master. In tantric lineages, the master is Shiva and the disciples are called Bhairava. If Shiva is the master, Bhairava are the dogs. Bhairava only wags its tail for Lord Shiva and no one else. Bhairava pay extreme allegiance to their master. Like the dogs are very loyal and faithful to their master similar is with Bhairava. The Bhairava never listens to "Shiva ninda"or "guru ninda". There is a famous story of one of the Lord Brahma's head being slayed by Bhairava for going against Lord Shiva's legacy.
The guru is the master and the dogs are the Bhairava. The master is merciless while training the dogs and so is Guru. The guru is merciless while training the disciples, the guru pushes the disciples comfort zone and limit. The Bhairava like the good dogs never bark to its master but comply to the masters wishes. The master saves the dog from being a stray dog and the Guru saves the disciple from being a common person. In tantric lineage, Bhairava is mini Shiva. Bhairava one day becomes full Shiva. Just like a Banyan seedling and a Banyan tree are both Banyan, Shiva and Bhairava both are Shiva. It is the only the question of development and a matter of time. For instance:
Mahasiddha Dattatreya is the ultimate guru of the siddha lineage. He has numerous disciples who are Mahasiddha themselves. Baba Balak Nath, Nagarjuna, Parshuram Rishi etc are all the Bhairavas of Mahasiddha Dattatreya.

The dog Hachi patiently waits for its master who never returns. One day the dog in the wait for its master dies. |

But having said all these there is one substantial difference between a Bhairava and a dog. If a dog is beaten to an extreme then at one point the dog might bark aggressively on its masters but real Bhairava they never bark back. Instead they just wag their tail to the masters beating. They know that the Guru is the epitome of compassion and whatever the Guru does ultimately benefits the Bhairava.
To be Bhairava is like a mud cake going through the furnance to become a brick. The Bhairava goes to the furnance of sadhana and after some time becomes as solid as a brick by the effect of sadhana and their is nothing that a Bhairava then cannot achieve.
I am one of the Bhairava of His Holiness Kaulantak Peethadeshwara Mahayogi Satyendra Nath ji Maharaj. He is the one who came down from Himalayas to instill the sadhana in his Bhairavas. For us, he is the great lord Shiva and our tail only wags to him and the great "Guru mandala" of the tantric Kaula lineage and none to the universe.

Every one is searching for Moksha, they travel far and wide for this and even go for pilgrimages. While doing all this, first requirement is to find God, and then ask him the way to get forgiveness from sin, and then receive Moksha [salvation].
ReplyDeleteEvery religion speaks of the requirement of Moksha or salvation. An inner voice from within man warns him of the impending uncertainty of tomorrow. Man has come into the world, and his earthly body, or even this world is not his final destination. The spirit of man will come out from his body and move on to the next destination, that is the judgment seat of God. His body made of the elements of this earth, will return to the dust.
Therefore salvation from Sin, Moksha and attaining a heavenly abode is the need of everyone. No one is looking forward to a destination of fiery hell, and torture in the darkness of eternity.
Therefore being afraid of a tomorrow every human being is willing to pay a price to attain salvation or Moksha.
With a narrow view, and limited wisdom, most people tend to think about the cost for this salvation. Some are ready to endure pain and torture, others do penance, and still others good works. They search for God with their own knowledge and philosophy, and wander through religious places and pilgrimages.
ReplyDeleteThey go around asking the cost of salvation so that they can arrange to pay it. They search their pockets for money and material. A rich person is willing to pay a higher price and be satisfied, whereas a poor man is willing to work it out with labor and rituals.
The merchants of religion meanwhile act as middlemen in this business of Moksha. A frightened, discouraged and miserable pilgrim falls into the net of these cheats. All his money gets stolen; he gets tired without concrete evidence or peace of God. All he has is false hope and uncertainty, and returns home.
Can we give anything to God? This is just impossible. The maker of heaven and the universe is God himself. He has created all that exists. He has created us the human beings, and he is the owner of all creation.
ReplyDeleteIf we take anything out of this creation and gift him or pay him as the price of our salvation then it is neither a gift nor the price because it all belongs to him anyway. All our money and wealth, that we have is received from his hand, so what gift shall we give? What price for our salvation shall we pay?
Let us try to understand this. In this vast universe, our earth can be compared and seen as a speck of dust. Our Sun is one million times larger than our earth. And there are other Suns in the universe that are millions of times larger than our own Sun, and are called Stars, that shine in the night sky.
ReplyDeleteA cloud of millions of Stars is called a Galaxy. And we are able to see millions of such Galaxies with the modern powerful Telescope.
The name of our own Galaxy is ‘Milky Way’ and to travel within this Galaxy from one end to the other at the speed of light i.e. 300000kms/sec will take 100000 years.
To get an idea of the vastness of time and space, let us decide to travel through just ten out of the millions of Galaxies, and it will take more than one 10 million years to accomplish this travel.
This vast universe is created by God himself. And within this our own Earth could be compared as a speck of dust. And imagine if we look into this particle with a powerful Microscope, then comparatively we humans will look like, the size of Microbes.
Now this microbe size human in this vastness of universe, and in the presence of a great God, is not taking Gods help for his Salvation. Man with his pride and arrogance, would like to buy his salvation with his own efforts and gifts.
This can be understood with an earthly example. Imagine there is a king who has millions of tons of Gold and silver and millions of tons of Diamonds in his possession. And in his kingdom there is a criminal who would like to pay for his crime and be freed from punishment by paying one Rupee to the King and please him through this gift and buy his freedom. Will this logic work?
Will a similar method work for salvation or Moksha. Sure you agree that this is a foolish way to even think and it is just impossible.
The almighty and living creator God is a loving God. We need grace and mercy from him and love to be forgiven from sin, and rescued from evil. Salvation of soul cannot be purchased by money, material or gifts.
Except that God works through intermediaries and delegates such vast power through a hierarchy many millions of entities helps to achieve God's plan. These intermediaries, depending on their own personal elevation, do accept the merit of gifts, and even material ones. Even thought, emotion and action all have a weight and unit of measure that can be evaluated physically. Any thought, prayer, or work devoted to God is a material sacrifice. DeleteSo well explained! Never knew the connection between Dog and Mahasiddha Dattatreya !
